Honeymoon Island State Park off the coast of Dunedin Florida was our destination this morning. We both decided it is time to start walking together a couple of times a week and what better spot to do that than our beautiful coastline?
Honeymoon Island got it's name in 1939 when a New York developer decided to build honeymoon huts on the island. At that time, Hog Island became known as Honeymoon Island and the name remains to this day.
When I was a kid, the only way out to Honeymoon Island was by boat. Today there are several bridges connecting the barrier islands to Honeymoon Island directly from Dunedin's Curlew Avenue (State Road 586). Once the road crosses Alternate 19, it is known as the Dunedin Causeway.
There have been many changes to the park in the last couple of years. For one thing, the restroom/changing facilities have new buildings that are much higher up in the air! I took this photo (below) of the new pavilion against the rising sun.
Honeymoon Island State Park is one of the best places to collect sea shells - early in the morning, right after a storm! It is also a fantastic spot to enjoy schools of dolphins playing off shore in the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Honeymoon Island State Park, just off the coast of Dunedin Florida, is constantly rated one of the best beaches in the nation! Little wonder that it is so popular with the locals!
